Redefining Resolutions: Looking Back and Moving Forward

We reflect on what we learned and where we grew in 2023. Let’s carry forward what worked for us as we move into 2024.

Laura likes New Year’s resolutions, but are they working. Are there other ways to make a change? Keith likes to think about resolution as goals and is aiming to keep the ball rolling after it drops on New Year’s Eve.Β

We set our one-word theme (maybe 2 words) for the new year and discuss strategies and tactics to help us succeed in 2024.

Thanks for joining us in 2023. Happy New Year!

Communication and Expectation

A trip to a winter market, what could go wrong?

We were looking for a way to recalibrate, to energize ourselves. Both a little tired and run down, Keith and Laura decide to focus on the most recent family weekend.

Laura loves to recharge through creative work and travel. Keith balances the feeling of not doing enough with making time for creative projects and relaxation.

Some topics were easy to talk about.
Laura doesn’t like to sit still and has several projects to check off her list. She leans into making holiday treats and festive crafts. Keith is reminded that he is a maker and acknowledges the need to plan, prioritize, and simply use his time effectively.

Some topics were more difficult.
While Keith’s practicality and sense of obligation can create overwhelm and distract from his practice and creativity, this time around, it threatens the whimsy and sense of play Laura craves while they explore.

We end up talking about partnerships. Is there a shift where someone is not only your partner, they’re your confidant, they’re your friend, they’re your coach, they’re your everything? It can be a lot to feel pressure to be everything, everywhere for someone. Laura says she get’s it, but Keith is skeptically optimistic.

What Game Are You Playing?

In today’s episode, we talk about goal achievement and how gamifying may or may not help us work through and achieve our goals.

Thinking about games brought up finite and infinite games. Knowing which is which and what kind of game you’re playing matters. We also bring up several of our favorite games. πŸ˜€

Laura gets stuff done. She looks to gamify her training for her 5K, 10K, and 13 mile runs as she embraces her long term goal of simply being a runner that continues to show up and invest in her practice.

Keith leans into efficiency and precision when completing chores and tasks. But, will that translate while working toward long term goals? He’s looking to tap into and harness his competitive, playful side to make strides now.

Make a Ruckus: Stop the Excuses and Do It Anyway

Welcome back to In Residence with Keith and Laura. We are creatives and makers at heart, seeking to make change, create culture and build relationships for ourselves and people like us who choose to show up and dig a little deeper. Join us as we grow in our partnership and as individuals.

In this episode, we dig into the stuck feeling surrounding Laura’s project.

How to make progress when there are all the excuses in the world as to why I’m not making progress?

Trying to get started, keep momentum going, trying to silence the voices of criticism either self-generated or external, Laura wants to move forward with her project. And at the same time, there is a voice saying, β€œSit down, not so fast. I’m too busy. I don’t have time. I got plenty going on.” How do you know now is the time to make a ruckus? Or, how do you know now is the time to wait and prepare for the ruckus to be made?

“I can get a lot done, but I’m stuck. I want to make a ruckus. But, I feel like I’m making it too precious. And there’s a part of me that says small, small progress isn’t enough, that that’s not a ruckus. That it isn’t big enough to make the change you want to make. And at the same time, I know that’s crap.”

The things we say we want to be doing. It’s time to stop saying I’m going to do them and start to do them. Making room in the schedule to do these things. Push outside comfort zones to do more than what’s currently happening.

When you start something new, it may not be easy. If you’re going to do what you are seeking to do, the change that you are looking to make, it’s pretty magical. So, why wouldn’t it be hard?

“I know right now you don’t want to do this, because you don’t think it’s enough, but you’re going to do it anyway.”

Thanks for joining us! Go Make a Ruckus.
