A Love Story

It’s not always easy. Do we rise to the occasion or pull back?

On her recent work trip, Laura went down a rabbit hole. She was listening to Mel Robbins’ The 5 Second Rule, Paulo Coelho’s The Alchemist, and Keith had shared a letter, he received at 18, from an amazing friend who had just passed away.

Laura knew Keith needed to talk. He was grieving. With all that swirling around, Laura gently and kindly makes space and attempts to coax Keith out of his shell. Sometimes, she’s too subtle. We start by pondering our journey, transition to moments where we jumped in or held back, and then shift to finding small steps that lead to happiness, and finish with the beauty of chasing dreams.

How do you react to that gut feeling, the moment when a choice arrives that can shift your trajectory? Do you leap, even if it’s scary?

Things could have been different, they almost were. Here’s to loving the journey and creating a life you love, a life in which you are truly happy, a life you want.

We are both so thankful we experienced part of the journey with our amazing friend, Denise. Confronting the complete heartbreak is only dulled by the pure love that we will always feel, cherish and hold when we think of you. We are dancing with letting go. At the same time, we will never stop looking for signs and you will never truly be gone.

A Creative Way of Being

In this episode Keith and Laura discuss Rick Rubin’s book, The Creative Act. We go through what resonated with us in the book. Laura listened while she was gardening, and the chapter, Seeds, definitely stood out. Spoiler alert, Keith loved the whole thing.

We were figuring out what In Residence was going to become recorded and recorded this session in May 2023. In the chaos of learning to record, edit, and ship a podcast, this and a couple other episodes were tucked away into a folder, sitting in the vault waiting to be revealed.

It’s working.

We have a postcard sized printout on a cork board.
It says:

“Everything you’re doing is working.”

I forget it’s there. But today, I saw it.
There are choices to be made and actions to take.

Hitting the Wall

Keith and Laura discuss hitting the wall, burnout, or simply having no energy left. How do we notice and give ourselves permission to take the time we need to rest and recalibrate?

Laura talks about the strategies that help her reset and refresh, while recognizing her propensity to smash into the wall. Keith points to the importance of implementing self-care before, during, or after we hit the wall.

How do you check in or stay in tune with and aware of where and when you need a recharge? Waiting for a pre-approved holiday isn’t a strategy. We deserve a schedule that serves us.

We reflect on what we learned and where we grew in 2023. Let’s carry forward what worked for us as we move into 2024.

Laura likes New Year’s resolutions, but are they working. Are there other ways to make a change? Keith likes to think about resolution as goals and is aiming to keep the ball rolling after it drops on New Year’s Eve.

We set our one-word theme (maybe 2 words) for the new year and discuss strategies and tactics to help us succeed in 2024.

Thanks for joining us in 2023. Happy New Year!

Communication and Expectation

A trip to a winter market, what could go wrong?

We were looking for a way to recalibrate, to energize ourselves. Both a little tired and run down, Keith and Laura decide to focus on the most recent family weekend.

Laura loves to recharge through creative work and travel. Keith balances the feeling of not doing enough with making time for creative projects and relaxation.

Some topics were easy to talk about.
Laura doesn’t like to sit still and has several projects to check off her list. She leans into making holiday treats and festive crafts. Keith is reminded that he is a maker and acknowledges the need to plan, prioritize, and simply use his time effectively.

Some topics were more difficult.
While Keith’s practicality and sense of obligation can create overwhelm and distract from his practice and creativity, this time around, it threatens the whimsy and sense of play Laura craves while they explore.

We end up talking about partnerships. Is there a shift where someone is not only your partner, they’re your confidant, they’re your friend, they’re your coach, they’re your everything? It can be a lot to feel pressure to be everything, everywhere for someone. Laura says she get’s it, but Keith is skeptically optimistic.
